A Different Kind of Hunting for the Holidays

Christmas Trees‘Tis the season to be jolly – and to start hunting for your Christmas Tree!

In true Montana fashion, many of our residents go out every year and try to find to locate the perfect Christmas tree. Families will go out and chop down their tree from the ample selection in the wilderness. Montana has a large variety of trees on public lands, and so many take advantage of this natural resource to choose their own tree every holiday season.

In 2013, the Montana Forest Service sold more than 1,400 permits to Helena residents, according to the Helena Independent Record. These permits are roughly $5 apiece, and families can purchase a total of three permits for their household. The Helena National Forest offers more information in this brochure.

Find a tree is a great family tradition. Christmas tree hunting is a great way to build character and form a family bond. It is also a great way to get out and meet others in your community. Permits are valid on all national forest lands, which means that there are plenty of places throughout the area – and the state –to find your perfect tree.

When choosing a tree, don’t forget that what can look perfect for your home may be too large. Make sure you know the space you have at home and don’t cut down a bigger tree than you can use. Be mindful, as well, of the specific areas where you cannot cut down trees, which includes campgrounds, timber sale areas and any place within 100 feet of a main road, stream or other recreation site.

Selecting a Christmas tree is a great family event. It is the perfect motivation to get your family moving outside, and the promise of hot chocolate, sledding and good clean family fun can make your trip an exciting and fun day for the whole family.

Helena also offers plenty of other great fun for the festive season, including the annual Breakfast with Santa, scheduled for Dec. 10 at Bert & Ernie’s. As Downtown Helena notes, this breakfast is free with a gift donation for Toys for Tots, though reservations are required.

As long-term Montana residents, we have grown fond of our local traditions, not only during the holidays but all year round.
