Why Winter Is Actually a Great Time to Sell

Selling Properties During Winter If you’re planning on selling your home, conventional wisdom out there suggests that it’s better to wait until the spring to put your house on the market. Some people say that there won’t be enough buyers out there looking during the colder months, and that it’s better to wait until the peak season begins to list your home. However, contrary to popular belief, putting your home on the market during this so-called downtime of winter may actually work out better for you in the long run.

Buyers who are looking for homes in the off-season tend to be more willing to commit to buying a home. These buyers tend to be people who are motivated buyers, looking because they have to relocate for job reasons or because they are starting or growing their family and they don’t have the luxury of waiting until the peak season begins. This means that there tends to be fewer rounds of back and forth, says U.S. News and World Report. Wintertime buyers are more focused and are generally willing to move quickly to close the right deal.

A well-staged interior can make your home easily stand out in a less busy marketplace during the winter season. Having a roaring fireplace and a smell of fresh holiday cookies or tasty winter treats can help to make a home more inviting, in turn helping make your home for sale all the more appealing for buyers. That’s not to say the outside should be neglected, either, though. Your driveway should be well plowed and your sidewalks all shoveled and salted. While curbside appeals are harder to see with shorter days and snowbanks, attention to cold-weather details can help to enhance the allure of a home.

In climates that have harsh winters like Montana, selling during the colder months can also be beneficial to both parties for another reason: buyers will be able to see the how the home handles the freezing temperatures and harsh snow. As a seller, maintaining a warm and inviting home during the colder season can impress would-be buyers and even result in a more beneficial deal for the seller. Beware, though, that this works for buyers, too, as they can use this knowledge to their advantage to explore the home to look for cold spots, drafts, noises from the heating system or other issues that may not be obvious in warmer weather.
