Understanding the Basics of Being a Real Estate Agent

We should begin with working to understand what it really means to be a real estate agent.  First off, having a position as a real estate agent is essentially having a business.  You will struggle as you learn the ropes and work to build your clientele.

Because your success depends on the number of transactions you complete, the commission paid to the brokerage and your own share might make it tough at the beginning to understand what your long-term salary might look like. Once you become established and connected, your salary will continue to increase if you continue to work hard.

Take Advantage of Resources

You should familiarize yourself with the Montana Board of Realty Regulation because they set the standard and enforce the requirements of real estate education.  An excellent source to refer to would be the Montana Department of Labor and Industry who acts as the official state website.

4 Critical Steps to Take

There are four significant steps to become licensed in Montana, and while it may seem overwhelming, it ultimately pays off once you understand your role and how the industry works.  Therefore, educating yourself is crucial.

  1. Find a school approved by the Board of Realty Regulation and complete 60 hours of pre-licensing instruction.
  2. Earn an 80% score or higher on the Montana Brokerage Exam in either Missoula, Great Falls, or Billings.
  3. Train in the field to gain experience for two years as a licensed sales person.
  4. Lastly, complete 30 residential real estate transactions and at least 10 commercial, agricultural or ranch real estate transactions within three years.

We know, it sounds like a lot of work and it is!
